Milagros Menjíbar was born in Sevilla in 1952 and she is considered the most important representative of the bata de cola school of Sevilla. She has a refined dance, feminine and very slender. It excels the grace of her hands movements and the way she moves the body, the shoulders, the arms and the hips. Her bata (a traditional female flamenco Barcelona outfit) illuminates the stages where she performs and it surprises and dazzles everyone lucky enough to contemplate her performance. Her dance is elegant, aesthetic and plastic, a type of dance that is pure narcissism because, as the masters say, if you want to dance like the best ones you have to like yourself.
Milagros is, also, a woman in love with a type of dance. She has identified herself with it since she was a kid, she has defended it and she has dedicated her whole life to learn it, improve it and transmit the legacy she has received.
Born into a humble family, Milagros started singing in the streets when she was barely a kid. She passed on her characteristic joy to everyone who listened her and, every time she started singing, there already a group of people around her almost immediately after.
When she stopped being a kid she change the singing for the dance and, when she was 13 she joined Patio Andaluz, a dance school. She was too young to be hired so she hided herself with her mom in the backstage and, when the inspectors were gone, she started to perform.
At the age of 17 Milagros started to work at Matilde Coral, the only flamenco Barcelona academy of those times. When she was 21 she won the first prize in the Concurso Nacional de Córdoba and she kept working until she finished her contract. Once it had ended, Milagros travelled to Japan to transmit to the new generations her flamenco Barcelona knowledge, and specially her knowledge of bata de cola school of Sevilla. During the time she was in Japan she mentored Amy Tanaka, the only Japanese woman who has ever won the Concurso Nacional de Córdoba.
In 1985 Milagros joined the Peña Flamenca de Huelva where she gave flamenco Barcelona lessons. Shortly after, Romualdo Molina and Miguel Espain met her and they offer her a TV Program. It was in those times when the name of Milagros spread around Spain. She participated in the Biennal of Flamenco and also performed in the most important scenarios and tablaos of the country, including, of course, Tablao Cordobes Flamenco Barcelona. From there on, Milagros travelled again out of Spain and she performed in Holland, part of Europe and also in America.
Since 1997, Milagros is a dance teacher at Escuela de Arte Flamenco de la Fundación Cristina Heeren, where she teaches choreographies with bata de cola.
